Visionary fiction is fantastical writing that helps you imagine new worlds. It encompasses science fiction, fantasy, horror, magical realism, and alternative timelines.
The Visionary Fiction Alliance defines the term thus: “Visionary Fiction embraces spiritual and esoteric wisdom, often from ancient sources, and makes it relevant for our modern life. These gems of wisdom are brought forth in story form and in a way that readers can experience the wisdom from within themselves.
As the author of ReCo2gnition, I feel that the spiritualism is represented in the story through Dr. Richards searching to find his true self and overcome his problems to renew himself, which is synonymous with the resurrection of Christ during this Easter period of renewing himself. It represents each other seeking to find the inner hero in ourselves to overcome adversity personally and environmentally.
ReCO2gnition joined the Visionary Fiction Alliance, as the story is a perfect representation of Visionary Fiction which resonates with the protagonist’s vision to save the world from climate change and potential manmade nuclear disasters. The protagonist’s character typifies us as humans, where we can all empathise and relate to his struggle to overcome his own mental health problems, yet is the very reason which spurs him on to produce his genius innovative design solutions that help save the world. On his journey we feel the emotion of the protagonist embrace spiritualism, and develop a pursuit of esoteric wisdom that is found in artefacts and ancient religion that leads him to the doorway of a unique time travel portal. The spiritual wisdom from the ancient religion which relates to the mystical time travel in the story forms so that readers can imagine mystical myths from within themselves. Suggesting that time travel may have been thought of by ancient religions and related to the church, underpinning a connection between spiritualism and belief of the unexplained or possibilities of new technological advancements throughout generations. ReCo2gnition is an exemplar story of Visionary fiction which emphasises the future and envisions humanity’s transition into evolved consciousness of finding the answers to combat climate change, whilst accepting and overcoming mental health and using it as motivational and creative strength to help combat climate change.
